Arguably Mexico's most renown artist, Frida Kahlo was born to a German father of Hungarian descent and a Mexican mother of Spanish and Native American descent. Although Kahlo was destined to study medicine at the National Preparatory School in Mexico City, she changed paths, mainly due to a bus accident in 1925 which severely injured her. During the slow road to recovery Kahlo taught herself to paint. Her work is now internationally recognised and admired, mainly for the uncompromising and brilliantly coloured self-portraits she produced.
